ORGAN DONATION: YOUR CHOICE TODAY = LIVES SAVED TOMORROW
Donating any type of organ, such as plasma, blood components, or even hair, is a charitable and noble act that deserves respect. Consenting to organ donation is not only a noble act but also an opportunity to give someone a second chance at life in the future.
One legally supported decision by a donor can save up to eight lives! In Western transplantology, this has long been common practice. In Ukraine today, organ donation has increased in value and importance. However, more information is often needed, and misconceptions and superstitions still prevent the phenomenon from spreading.
Why is organ donation important today? Let's try to summarise the answer in a few key factors:
- Daily need: Thousands of people around the world are constantly waiting for a life-saving transplant.
- Second chance: A decision to donate after death can save up to eight lives, and donated tissue can improve the lives of up to 50 people.
- Rehabilitation: Donation also helps restore patients' health from serious illness or injury.
There are different types of organ donation. Depending on the situation and the donor's and recipient's readiness for the transplant procedure, they can be as follows:
- Living donation: where the donor gives an organ (or part of an organ) during their lifetime. This is most commonly a kidney or part of a liver. Such donations are often made for relatives or loved ones.
- Posthumous donation: when organs are donated after the donor has died. This decision can save the lives of many people. The heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and corneas are the most commonly used organs for transplantation.
- Cell and tissue donation: the ability to donate tissues such as skin, bones, blood vessels, tendons, and cells such as stem cells.
Giving consent to organ donation is undoubtedly a powerful act that requires a well-considered decision, awareness, and psychological readiness of the donor.
