November 12 - World Pneumonia Day

Pneumonia, or serious lung injury, is considered to be the most common and extremely dangerous infectious cause of high mortality in young children worldwide. According to the WHO, in recent years, pneumonia has caused the deaths of about 14% of children under 5 years of age.
In Ukraine, according to official data, in 2024, more than 6,000 adults and 82 children died from complications of pneumonia, 16 of whom were under the age of one year. With pneumonia, the alveoli of a person with pneumonia fill with fluid, breathing becomes problematic and painful, and the body rapidly loses strength.
Among the most common symptoms of the lesion are high fever, cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. For babies, complications of pneumonia often turn into a matter of life and death. But almost all of these deaths could have been prevented. We have gathered some key tips from doctors on how to protect your child:
- Vaccination is the most effective protection.
Vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pneumococcal vaccine (PCV), and against whooping cough and measles save the lives of thousands of kids.
- Complete nutrition is a strong immune system.
Malnutrition combined with cold and polluted air is a direct path to illness.
- Clean air and hygiene are simple but effective steps.
Avoid smoking and dusty parts, ventilate your home, and teach your children to properly wash their hands.
- Never delay a visit to the doctor.
Self-medication is not a heroic act, but a risk. Early diagnosis is a chance for a speedy recovery.
Pneumonia is not just a “cold with complications”. It is a serious disease that demands attention, early detection, prevention, and a responsible attitude toward your health. While doctors fight to save lives, prevention remains the most humane way to conquer diseases.
