Oleksandr Demchenko is a strong-willed, tenacious boy. All his life he has been struggling with the consequences of the difficult diagnoses he received immediately after his premature birth. A neurosonography scan at the maternity hospital confirmed Sashko's brain damage.
When he was one month old, he had to undergo three operations for retinopathy of prematurity. Doctors managed to save his sight, but Sashko has had to wear glasses and contact lenses all his life. He was only able to go home after 3 months in hospital...
Since then, Sashko's life has consisted of systemic therapy and regular rehabilitation classes. As the boy's mother says, each day is planned minute by minute. Warm-up exercises in the morning, lessons with a speech therapist, sensory and fine motor skills, physiotherapy and swimming, and even riding a bike and a scooter.
At the age of 1, Sashko was diagnosed with spastic tetraparesis of grade 4. Doctors' predictions for the child's physical and intellectual development were disappointing. But the perseverance of the mother and the boy eventually brought positive results. Today, Sashko is in first grade. He understands everything, reads syllables, and counts.
In 2023, Sashko had surgery on his legs to weaken the tone of his limbs. Now the child has persistent motor disorders and needs a course of correction at the Rehabilitation and Neurophysiology Centre. Help the boy and his family get the therapy they need to recover and thrive!
