Three-year-old Maria, who has internal organ pathologies, has undergone several complex surgeries and requires restorative treatment!
Maria Masych, who turned three in January, has been in our care for an extended period. She was born prematurely and has been fighting severe congenital organ pathologies since the first minutes of her life. Oesophageal atresia has made Maria's life a continuous ordeal. In her first two years, she underwent five complex surgeries, including stomach operations.
Feeding via gastrostomy, continuous medical procedures, and the need for specialized enteral nutrition have become part of her daily life. 2025 was a very difficult year for Maria. She weighed 11 kg. In March, she underwent surgery to remove part of her upper right lung and repair her esophagus.
A week after the surgery, the esophagus separated and infected the organs. Maria underwent an emergency esophagostomy, in which the esophagus was brought to the outside. She was in intensive care for two weeks. Because her body was very weak, she spent a total of six months in the hospital. The wounds healed slowly and took a long time. However, despite all the difficulties, she did not give up hope of recovery.
Gradually, she took her first independent steps and began to gain weight. She now weighs 12 kg. Maria needs comprehensive rehabilitation, a specialized enteral nutrition formula, and consumables for caring for her oesophagostomy and gastrostomy. Diagnosis: Congenital esophageal atresia without tracheoesophageal fistula (Q39.0), congenital tracheomalacia, esophagobronchial fistulas (S6, S10), aspiration pneumonia, diffuse mucous-catarrhal endobronchitis, microgastria, status post gastrostomy and esophagostomy.
Surgical history includes: Stamm–Kader gastrostomy (25 Jan 2023); posterolateral thoracotomy with esophageal segment elongation using traction sutures according to the Foker technique (12 Apr 2023); redo thoracotomy with esophago-esophageal anastomosis (31 May 2023); relaparotomy with cruroplasty, Nissen fundoplication, redo gastrostomy according to Kader, and placement of a feeding tube into the small intestine (20 Nov 2023); right redo thoracotomy with pneumolysis, division of esophago-mediastinal-bronchial fistulas (S2, S6, S10), upper lobectomy, atypical resection of segments S6 and S10, and closure of an esophageal defect (13 Mar 2025); subsequent right redo thoracotomies with revision and sanitation of the pleural cavity, closure and re-amputation of the upper-lobe bronchial stump, separation of the esophagus with exteriorization of a cervical esophagostomy, and closure of the distal esophageal segment with fixation to the prevertebral fascia (19 Mar 2025, 23 Mar 2025).
Complication: paralytic ileus.
