Six-year-old Stepan, who has cerebral palsy, dreams of becoming a doctor. Help the boy get on his feet and continue to develop!
Stepan Suvorov was born weighing just 980 g at 28 weeks of gestation. He did not breathe independently and had a number of complex diagnoses after birth. These included neonatal cerebral ischemia, bilateral intragastric hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, convulsive syndrome, umbilical hernia, anemia, and retinopathy of prematurity.
"If he survives, then we will register him!" This was the phrase Stepan's mother heard at the maternity hospital when she was refused registration of the child on the tenth day of his life. The doctors offered no hope, but the mother believed in her son. Stepan coped; he spent a total of three months in the hospital and began his long rehabilitation immediately after discharge.
Stepan’s parents experienced all the stages of grief when they realized that their child had cerebral palsy. At age one, the boy could roll over only onto one side. Thanks to regular specialist classes, tangible results appeared later. At two years old, Stepan first said the word 'mum'. After that, his rehabilitation program was supplemented with classes with a speech therapist and a corrective teacher.
The child is now in his “rapid growth period”. Unfortunately, this has worsened his overall condition: his limbs have become more spastic, his back has weakened, and he has lost his balance, making coordination of movement extremely difficult. Doctors advise focusing on reducing spasticity through massage, exercise therapy, and osteopathic treatment. Only intensive rehabilitation will enable him to walk independently!
The boy is regularly engaged in rehabilitation centers in Zaporizhzhya. He can sit with support and is working to sit independently. He can stand with support and take small steps. Stepan can communicate in short sentences, count to ten, recognize letters, and read syllables. He loves puzzles and themed games and dreams of becoming a doctor.
