9-year-old Danya is suffering from the effects of a rare metabolism disorder. Help the boy get rehab!
Danyil Yepanov has had a rare genetic disease – glutaric aciduria type 1 – since a very early age. This diagnosis has been confirmed in only 6 children in Ukraine so far. The severe metabolic disorder causes the buildup of toxic acids that impact the child's central nervous system.
Glutaric aciduria usually appears early with neurological issues, seizures, and the risk of disability. This happened to Danya – the disease first showed itself when the boy was 6 months old. Since then, he has been on continuous treatment, a gluten-free diet, and special nutrition.
At six months old, Danyil stopped eating and holding his head up, and during his first year he suffered from viral encephalitis. The boy's early childhood was filled with continuous medical exams, doctor visits, and hospital stays. The parents did everything they could to give him the necessary care and treatment.
At 9 years old, Danya appears to be no more than 4 years old. He does not speak, sit independently, or walk. In rehabilitation sessions, he is gradually learning to hold his head up. Over the years, Danyil has been working with a speech therapist and a defectologist, attending massages and physical therapy. Rehabilitation and genetic testing are costly.
