10-YEAR-OLD ARTEM, WITH A NUMBER OF COMPLEX DIAGNOSES, JUST RECENTLY BEGAN TO SPEAK. SUPPORT THE BOY IN HIS DESIRE TO DEVELOP!
During the first month of his life, Artem Herasymenko fell seriously ill with acute bronchiolitis and developed respiratory failure. The boy was admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition and placed on a ventilator. Doctors gave almost no hope. Nevertheless, Artem fought desperately for his life and survived. Unfortunately, one of the consequences of this difficult episode was post-hypoxic damage to his central nervous system.
Later, this complication affected the child’s overall condition; the parents began to notice developmental peculiarities. Artem began to move his hands uncontrollably more often and became nervous. After numerous tests and consultations with a neurologist and a psychiatrist, the boy began to work systematically with specialists in behavior correction, speech therapists, and rehabilitation specialists, and he took exercises and massages.
Artem is now 10 years old and still has significant behavioral abnormalities that require attentive care and treatment. Among his diagnoses are: moderate mental retardation, speech disorders, encephalasthenic syndrome, strabismus and myopic astigmatism, and problems with gait and posture. Artem began speaking only at age 8. He does his best to practice speaking, repeating words, and to express his needs.
At the same time, his speech is not yet sufficiently developed. He knows letters but mispronounces many sounds and does not always fully understand spoken language. That is why Artem needs systematic classes with a speech therapist. For him, this is an opportunity to learn to speak more clearly, be understood by others, and become more independent in the future.
Artem has sensory and motor impairments. It is difficult for him to adapt to new situations, so the most important therapy for him now is work on coordination of movements, motility, sensory perception, neurocorrection, and occupational therapy. Despite all the difficulties, Artem is a very kind and sensitive boy. He likes to draw and sculpt with plasticine, cook with his mother, and listen to fairy tales.
In the near future, Artem must pass the ADOS-2, Leiter-3, and DIR evaluation. These examinations are necessary to better understand his current level of development, his strengths, current difficulties and needs, and, based on this, to choose an appropriate program of rehabilitation and corrective classes.
