13-YEAR-OLD MARKIAN IS OVERCOMING THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF A RARE GENETIC DISORDER. HELP HIM TAKE HIS FIRST INDEPENDENT STEPS!
When Markian Smerechanskyi was just 9 months old, he suddenly contracted an enteroviral infection. The illness triggered a severe complication that changed the boy's life forever. Markian lost all the developmental milestones he had achieved and regressed to the developmental level of a newborn; he stopped sitting, crawling, and standing.
His parents consulted doctors in Lviv, Kyiv, and Kharkiv, but for a long time no one could identify the cause of the regression. Eventually, a diagnosis was confirmed: glutaric aciduria type I, mitochondrial encephalopathy, and spastic tetraparesis with impaired motor function. Thus began a long battle for Markian’s health.
Glutaric aciduria is a rare hereditary disorder that causes serious difficulties in amino acid metabolism. Due to a genetic mutation, the patient’s body loses the ability to properly break down certain substances, leading to the accumulation of toxic acids in the tissues and blood.
Throughout his life, Markian has completed 22 rehabilitation courses. Regular therapy sessions and medical treatment are yielding positive results. Thanks to his hard work, Markian has learned to sit, crawl, and stand while holding onto support. He is taking his first steps with a walker and crutches, but he still can’t walk independently.
Markian’s deepest dream is to take independent steps and, one day, play football with his friends. The boy urgently needs another course of rehabilitation to help him maintain the skills he has already gained and to become more independent. Please help Markian move closer to his dream!

Diagnosis: Glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1; glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency), associated with spastic tetraparesis and impaired motor function, focal epilepsy of metabolic etiology with focal seizures, and psychomotor developmental delay.
The goal of the project is to raise UAH 29,972 to pay for a rehabilitation course at the LLC Kozyavkin International Rehabilitation Clinic.
