9-YEAR-OLD DMYTRO WITH CP IS OVERCOMING THE EFFECTS OF HIS CONDITION AND WORKING TO WALK INDEPENDENTLY. HELP HIM GET THE REHABILITATION!
Dmytro Shevchenko was born prematurely at 27 weeks' gestation. For a long time, he could not breathe on his own. He required a ventilator and tube feeding and survived a grade III hemorrhage and shunt surgery. Brain damage led to cerebral palsy, spastic tetraparesis, and epilepsy.
In total, Dmytro spent the first 6 months of his life at the Okhmatdyt hospital, constantly moving between the intensive care unit and the neonatal care unit. After months in the hospital and his discharge, Dmytro began rehabilitation: he engaged in neuro-correction and physical therapy, worked with psychologists and speech therapists, and attended a swimming pool.
o’s parents never stopped believing in him and treated him like a neurotypical child. Their efforts began to bear fruit: Dmytro gradually learned to crawl, took his first unsteady steps with assistive devices, learned to stand while holding onto a support, and began making his first sounds.
Dmytro is now 9 years old; he is a second-grade student and can walk up to 10 meters independently. He speaks in full sentences, though his speech is unclear due to dysarthria. Thanks to daily practice, Dmytro keeps pace with the school curriculum. He enjoys math, counts, reads, writes, and has a good memory.
To consolidate his progress and prevent regression, Dmytro requires daily therapy sessions. Even a one-week break causes spasticity to return, and the child’s legs, arms, and tongue no longer function properly. The boy's family appeals to anyone who cares to help Dmytro continue his development and finally begin walking fully.
