21 MARCH - World Down Syndrome Day
Have you seen people wearing multi-colored, mismatched socks today? This is not just a weird fashion trend! This flash mob is a show of support. On 21 March, the whole world celebrates Down Syndrome Day, and colorful socks symbolize the uniqueness of each person and support for inclusion.
Unfortunately, there is still a lack of knowledge about Down syndrome in society. It is not a disease in any sense of the word! It cannot be medically "cured" because it is a genetic trait caused by an extra 21st chromosome. It affects overall development but does not determine a person's potential!
There are many myths about Down's syndrome, and they have become entirely entrenched in the mass consciousness. But as you know, myths are there to be debunked. We have collected some of the most common misconceptions about people with Down syndrome and their sound refutations.
Myth: People with Down syndrome cannot study or work.
Truth: They can be educated, work, and lead active lives. Many countries have support programs to help them develop their talents and skills.
Myth: Down syndrome is a rare condition.
Truth: According to official statistics, one in 700 newborns has this condition.
Myth: Children with Down's syndrome are only born to older parents.
Truth: The mother's age can affect the likelihood of having a child with Down syndrome, but most children with the condition are born to young parents.
We always support any project that promotes inclusion. If society creates opportunities for people with Down syndrome, they can be happy, active, and successful! Inclusion is not just about equal education, healthcare, or employment access. It is about respect, acceptance, and a fulfilling life.
Charity Exchange "DobroDiy" supports every young patient, regardless of their diagnosis. Among our wards are children who have been diagnosed with Down syndrome, among other conditions. We aim to help them get the rehabilitation and support they need for a better chance at a healthy and active life.
We invite everyone who cares to support our young wards with complex diagnoses on our official website: https://248.dp.ua/projects
